Inspiration

The premise and backstory for the environment was heavily inspired by games such as;

  • Dead Space
  • Prey
  • Doom
  • The Calisto Protocol
These are all games set in outer space and benefit from the isolated environment and atmosphere.
In particular, Dead Space's environment provided the most inspiration for this environment. The industrial look and very dark environment creates and eerie and suspenseful atmosphere. The abundance of vents through out the game provide excellent vantage points for enemies to traverse the map and ambush the player. Dead spaces alien artifact and it's effects were also a source of inspiration for my own.

Doom has a similar environment to Dead Space with the industrial look and also has more aspects of a mining base. The lighting is also similar and was a source of inspiration for the lighting and atmosphere in my environment. Doom 3 in particular has lots of environments with elaborate pipes and cables. The dimly lit corridors are similar to those I want to create for my own environment.

Fallout Games:

The fallout games have a very unique style with their futuristic but also 80s themed technology and weapons. This style is reminiscent of cold war technology and was a source of inspiration for when I was researching for the design of the computers and other technology for my base.

Places such as abandoned mines and factories as well as modern day mines and industrial sites also supported my design decisions.
